Last week, Tony escaped from his busy schedule for a rare flight. Laden with cameras and tripods, we drove towards the Midlem airfield at speed, running from the dark clouds above. Naturally, they caught us. On the Selkirk road, fat raindrops exploded on the windshield. At the airfield, the wind howled. The moody sky threatened more trouble. In these conditions, a safe launch was impossible. A strong gust of wind would knock Tony’s aeroplane to the ground. The apparent fragility of the aircraft surprised me.
Grounded by the weather, we filmed in the hangar. Tony discussed his love of flight. I photographed Tony’s plane, Savannah, a sturdier aircraft named Jester, and an odd skeletal frame that Tony identified as an open-air glider. The grey skies outside provided perfect lighting for a few moody shots of Tony and his aircraft. I’ve posted photographs from the Midlem shoot on Tony’s Facebook page.
